I Switched from Notes to NetworkedBlogs on Facebook

May 13, 2010 by Shawn Collins

I’ve been importing the RSS of a number of my blogs into Notes on Facebook for a long while, but I have been increasingly frustrated with how my posts would take days – even a week or more sometimes – to be added to my Facebook profile and pages.

I liked how I could tag people in Notes, but the delay in posting was too much.

So, I asked lots of people what they were using, and got a lot of answers. But the one I heard most often was NetworkedBlogs.

I switched all of my RSS feeds a week or so ago to NetworkedBlogs, and I’ve been very pleased.

My posts are imported quickly, and I like how the link to the post takes the visitor to my blog, rather than a page on Facebook.

The page for the post on my blog is framed by a bar with social sharing options on Facebook and Twitter, as well as a Facebook “Like” button and a link to make comments.

There is also a link to a version of the blog with recent posts that resides within the application on Facebook.

Also, you can import more than one RSS feed to your profile and/or page, which wasn’t possible with Notes.

Add you blog(s) to NetworkedBlogs. You need a Facebook account, but if you don’t have one, why are you still reading here?

What Americans Really Want…Really by Frank Luntz

May 10, 2010 by Shawn Collins

I picked up What Americans Really Want…Really by Frank Luntz, because his previous book, Words That Work, is one of my favorite business books.

So, I was anxious to read What Americans Really Want…Really, and I think it’s also a great book for marketers.

The subtitle of the book is The Truth About Our Hopes, Dreams, and Fears, and as the title spells out, the book explains what Americans want. Pretty basic concept and an important thing to know for those in the business of marketing and selling things.

All of the chapters won’t be pertinent to everybody, but some that should have widespread application are “What Americans Really Want in Their Daily Lives,” The Five Things That Matter Most,” and “The 2020 Generation.”

If you’re not familiar with Frank Luntz, he’s a business and political consultant, as well as a pollster, and essentially, his thing is to explain the present and predict the future.

Anyhow in marketing or trying to reach customers in any sector would benefit from this book.

How Hard Do Entrepreneurs Work?

May 5, 2010 by Shawn Collins

I get lots of emails and calls from people asking how they can make money fast in affiliate marketing. And 4-Hour Workweek is one of the best-selling books currently. Sorry to break it to the desperate and the dreamers, but there is no easy, lazy way to succeed.

It takes lots of time and sacrifice.

At least that’s the impression I get from the responses of fellow entrepreneurs in a blog post from Daniel Scocco, Interview: 12 Top Online Entrepreneurs Share How Hard They Work.

Daniel asked myself and eleven other folks, including Darren Rowse, Rand Fishkin, and Chris Pearson, about how hard they work.

I was sort of glad to see that I am normal, in a sense, when it comes to the days and hours I work. Normal is subjective, I suppose, but my schedule is typical of the other people listed, who I know and admire.

When I was answering the question about vacations, I felt weirdly guilty, because it’s been nearly a decade since I took a week long vacation. Since then, I’ve been on lots of long weekends, but never a week or more.

And it looks like I’m not alone. My answer was pretty consistent with the others, who mostly take no vacation or short getaways.

I think Dan Schawbel put it best when he said, “Everyday is vacation when you’re doing what you love”.

I No Longer Earn Affiliate Commissions

May 4, 2010 by Shawn Collins

I got an announcement yesterday that Amazon was now making Kindle books available in their affiliate program. That was big news to me, but it wasn’t the most noteworthy thing about the email.

Instead, I was struck by the language in the message, which didn’t make any mention of affiliate commissions, but made a number of references to the advertising fees affiliates could earn.

While I can’t recall if Amazon used the word commissions in the past, this is the first time I noticed that I could earn advertising fees.

Since industry semantics have been an issue in some states with regards to the advertising tax, I would think this sort of wording would be a good idea for other affiliate programs and networks to use.
