Life Hacks to Improve Your Work Day

October 27, 2015 by Shawn Collins

The term life hack is pretty overused these days, but it applies here, so I am going with it. If you are not familiar with life hacks, they are strategies or techniques to increase productivity or efficiency.

Here are some life hacks that have helped me get things done and feel better at work.

Stand at Your Desk

Sitting at a desk all day is bad for you, according to James Levine, an endocrinologist at the Mayo Clinic. So stand up. No, not to work at a standing desk. Stand up, walk away from your desk, and out of your office. Get fresh air to clear your head.

Don’t Eat Lunch at Your Keyboard

I won’t lie… if I turned my keyboard upside down right now, there would be all sorts of nasty crumbs and food bits on my desk. I eat at my desk a lot, but I also make it out to lunchtime meetups or just to lunch with a person or two as often as I can. Those lunches outside of the office are great to share ideas, vent, and experience sunshine.

Avoid Meetings

You know and I know that the majority of meetings are a huge waste of time. If you run your own company or team, consider this as an exercise – break out how much each person in a meeting makes per hour (yeah, they are on salary – you have a calculator on your phone. Figure it out!). Unless you are having the sort of super-efficient meetings that only exist on TV shows, you’re wasting a lot of money.

Take a Break for Fun Stuff

Sometimes you just need a mental health day or afternoon. A good day for this is Wednesday, at least during baseball season. This is often the last day of a series with a game played around lunchtime, so the visiting team doesn’t have to travel too late to the next game. Years ago, this was known as the “businessman’s special”, but that term isn’t cool with the PC police, so let’s call it baseball hooky. I also love to see a movie matinee or get out on a boat on a weekday – less people, more water to enjoy.

Keep a Schedule for Drinking Water

Well, you should always be hydrated for good health, but also, it’s good to have a reason to get up and stretch every hour or so. Lots of water has a way of making that necessary. Bring a water bottle to work and make marks for how much to drink on the hour and gulp down a pint or so an hour.

Use Caffeine as a Nap Alarm

I won’t bother trying to sell you on the virtue of naps. It’s obvious that they are awesome. Various studies indicate that caffeine kicks in between 30 and 60 minutes. When I need a quick nap, I’ll chug a can of Diet Dr. Pepper and jump in bed. I am refreshed and ready around an hour later. Magic!

Thanks for Your Support for the 2015 AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer

October 20, 2015 by Shawn Collins

I walked 39.3 miles with the Affiliate Marketers Give Back team in the AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer in New York City this past weekend. I ended up at the #6 overall individual fundraiser with $28,875, and our Affiliate Marketers Give Back team (Vanessa Branco, Tricia Meyer, and me) raised $34,323.

2015-10-18 15.23.13

Walkers raised $8.7 million overall to accelerate breast cancer research, improve access to screening, diagnosis and treatment, and educate people about breast cancer.

The first day was Saturday, October 17, and we got together before sunrise on the west side of Manhattan.

The early start kicked off a marathon walk (yes, literally 26.2 miles). It was a really neat way to see New York. We finished the first day of walking on Randall’s Island in pretty good shape – just some blisters and soreness.

The second day, Sunday, October 18, started before sunrise with a breakfast in the dark morning. We loaded up on some carbs and protein before setting out for the remaining 13.1 miles.

In the late morning of the second day, we hit the finish line, and that was such a satisfying and emotional moment. All of the training and fundraising and everything lead up to that happy moment at the end.

Thank you so much to everybody who supported me through donations, positive thoughts, texts, etc. Also, I’d like to give a big thank you to the Affiliate Marketers Give Back team.

It was a lot of fun to spend all that time chatting and joking and singing with Tricia and Vanessa.

And a big thanks to Avon and all of the volunteers who made this all happen. What a giant undertaking, and it ran so well, and they took such great care of us.

What an inspiring, humbling, wonderful, emotional, and transformative weekend.

I Guess I’m Not Much of a Marketer After All

October 7, 2015 by Shawn Collins

I’ve been working in marketing since the 90’s, and I think I have a pretty good grasp on it. But there is a campaign I’ve been working on this year that has been a real disappointment.

Dude, where's my pizza?

You see, I’ve been trying to raise funds for AVON 39 The Walk to End Breast Cancer, and it’s been difficult to get even a $5 donation from people I’ve known for years.

Maybe it’s the way I’m selling it – so, I am walking 39.3 miles in New York City on October 17-18, and every dollar I bring in can make a world of difference.

For instance, a donation of $125 helps four homebound breast cancer patients receive nutritious meals while undergoing treatment.

And $200 helps an uninsured person access life-saving tests, such as a mammogram or a bone scan to see if breast cancer has spread.

At the higher amounts, it’s even more impactful, like $500 helps two uninsured breast cancer patients access chemotherapy treatment.

Even a donation of $0.15 for each mile walked ($5.85 total) would help.

I’ve managed to get plenty of Facebook likes and ReTweets, but let’s be honest – that doesn’t really help.

What do you say… will you help me salvage this campaign with a small donation?
