The Reality of Affiliate Marketing

October 19, 2010 by Shawn Collins

Q: I have two jobs and barely get any free time, I am starting to age faster than expected and I have been researching affiliate marketing for about 2 weeks I have blogs with wordpress and blogger but I rarely use them. What do I need to do to get started on this path to work from home or from anywhere freedom. please help me

Shawn CollinsA: Let me start off with a reality check. Most affiliates are not surviving financially on their affiliate earnings.

Affiliate marketing is a part time venture for most people. Instead, many are grateful to have their commissions help make ends meet by covering their hosting and/or cable bills.

The people who are running companies around affiliate marketing and making their living that way are comparatively rare.

However, if you are willing and able to invest a lot of time and resources into an affiliate marketing venture, you have a fighting chance to succeed.

It’s essential to avoid the temptation to quit, as it takes time to build up an audience and achieve even modest success.

But, you mentioned how you have two jobs and barely any free time. That’s a problem.

Unless you are able to find or create some time, I am not so optimistic about your chances at success. Can you find an hour or two a day to dedicate to affiliate marketing?

If you can find that time, come up with a topic you care about and start producing original content about it.

At the same time, promote your affiliate site(s) where you can. This could include posting comments to related discussion boards and blogs, where they permit a signature back to your site(s).

Get involved with the community around your topic and make a name for yourself. Trade some links with sites in your vertical.

Over time, things will grow, but it’s a slow process.

If this doesn’t sound like it’s something you’re up to doing, it’s probably best to stop before you get started.
