November Spawned a Monster in the Shape of Cyber Monday

Back in November, there was much talk about Cyber Monday (the first Monday after Thanksgiving) being the big online shopping day of the year.

But as the numbers came in, Cyber Monday turned out to be more of a silly marketing ploy from Shop.org to get journalists to quote Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org.

According to eMarketer, Monday, November 28, 2005 or Cyber Monday, was merely the 9th biggest online shopping day of the year.

Below are the days in order of non-travel online holiday shopping spending days among US home, work, and university Internet users (November 1 – December 16, 2005):

  1. Monday, December 12
  2. Tuesday, December 13
  3. Tuesday, December 6
  4. Wednesday, December 14
  5. Thursday, December 8
  6. Monday, December 5
  7. Wednesday, December 7
  8. Friday, December 9
  9. Monday, November 28
  10. Wednesday, November 30

On a very good note, ComScore estimates that online shopping in the US will exceed $19 billion (excluding travel) for the 2005 holiday season (November/December). That’s 24% growth over 2005.
