How Searchers See and Click on Google

August 4, 2005 by Shawn Collins

I just finished devouring a new report from Enquiro, the Google Eyetracking Report, and this study has vital information for affiliates that buy Google AdWords or work SEO to get rankings.

One very interesting part of the report was the Golden Triangle (“a distinct area of intense eye scan activity” where searchers are looking on results pages) “heatmap”. That is one of five types of searching behavior you should know about.

The report includes 64 of these sorts of “heatmaps” that show how people actually see the results in Google, plus copywriting tactics to get more clicks and data to determine how much to bid (sometimes you don’t need to be the #1 listing!).

There is an item in there that I’ve been practicing for quite some time – it explains that your site should appear in both the paid and organic listings for critical search terms.

And of course, if you’re marketing specifically to men or women… surprise, they have different habits when using Google.
