Stop Being a Self Centered Jerk in Business

June 11, 2014 by Shawn Collins

We do this thing with Affiliate Summit that really upsets some people – when we set deadlines and rules, we abide by them.

I am clueless and obnoxious - wanna work with me?The majority of people we come in contact with behave with grace and dignity when they realize they have missed a deadline or a policy is not ideal for them.

But then there are others that lash out, and sometimes even make threats.

Recently, we gave away 60 networking passes to Affiliate Summit East 2014 through a contest. In our contests, we always state that the passes are not transferable.

One winner was not pleased. He said he is not available to attend the conference, and he’d like to give it to somebody else.

When we stated our policy is that the pass could not be transferred, he said he’d post about his awful experience with us on social media.

This did not persuade us to bend the rules for him.

Another character failed to purchase his pass by the end of the early bird period.

We explained that we were sticking by our deadline, which had been announced months in advance, and we had posted reminders about it on our blog, newsletter, Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn, and Twitter.

Anyhow, our unwillingness to make an exception for him resulted in him stating in email that he would just sneak into the conference.

For anybody who is not aware, that is considered criminal trespass – another rule we take seriously.

Are we the crazy outliers for believing that selectively enforcing rules is bad?

Amazon Launches a Competitor to PayPal

June 10, 2014 by Shawn Collins

Amazon Payments was launched by Amazon this week to allow customers to automatically pay recurring charges, such as monthly subscription fees or phone bills, by using their Amazon log-in details.

amazon-payments

There are 240 million monthly active users on Amazon, according to TechCrunch, who currently store their credit card information on Amazon.com.

I checked this morning, and Amazon Payments was not, yet, an option to be paid affiliate commissions by the Amazon affiliate program, but I would imagine that is coming soon.

It will be interesting if Amazon Payments becomes as standard as PayPal with business transactions.

I’ve created an account to start playing around with it, and I am curious to see how it works for me on both a personal level and as a potential payment option for Affiliate Summit down the road.

Online Resources Entrepreneurs Use To Increase Productivity and Grow Their Business

June 3, 2014 by Shawn Collins

Nick Loper has new book out on Kindle titled Work Smarter: 350+ Online Resources Today’s Top Entrepreneurs Use To Increase Productivity and Grow Their Business.

work-smarterHe surveyed more than 500 entrepreneurs about their favorite online tool or resource and then organized all of the answers in an easy to digest format.

There are a broad range of resources, including the areas of productivity, communication, team and project management, file sharing, networking, and outsourcing, and more.

Many of the resources mentioned are free, and a lot of the premium tools have a free trial, so you can check if they might be a good fit for your business.

The contributors to the book include Seth Godin, Tim Ferriss, Chris Brogan, John Lee Dumas, Guy Kawasaki, Dan Pink, Pat Flynn, Chris Ducker, Peter Shankman, Sean Malarkey, and Bob Burg.

I was already familiar with some of the tools in the book, but I was also introduced to many others, and that makes it a very worthwhile read to me.

The book is free on Kindle through Friday, June 6, 2014.
