I Used to Be an Assistant Manager at Blockbuster Video

November 12, 2013 by Shawn Collins

I feel a little sentimental about the end of Blockbuster, because I worked there and I was a customer for a long time.

Blockbuster

It’s sort of like the old 80’s video game arcade – it’s outdated and unnecessary, but it still holds a place and time in my mind.

I had a brief stint as an Assistant Manager at Blockbuster Video in Laurel, MD in the fall of 1993. It was shortly after I graduated college, and I couldn’t find the job with a salary and benefits that I expected would be waiting for me when I got my diploma.

The hourly rate of $7 was actually pretty exciting to me at the time. It was up from the $5.50 an hour I was pulling down at my first post-college job as a front desk guy at a Comfort Suites.

I was the newest one on the management team when I was hired a little more than 20 years ago, so I was assigned the Thanksgiving afternoon and night shift. That sort of sucked, and on top of that, lots of old friends from high school were back visiting parents and stopped in to get a video on Thanksgiving.

Many of them had moved on to jobs they supposedly liked, and I was busy doing the “be kind, rewind” thing. But I got free rentals, so there.

Anyhow, after working from 2:00pm to close on Thanksgiving, I went into work the next day and proclaimed that I was glad I’d be off on Christmas, since I took the Thanksgiving shift. Nope, I was told I’d get to work Christmas, too.

Fortunately, one of my many interviews paid off a couple days later, and I got an administrative job. It was still hourly and with no benefits, but it was more money, and no uniform. My career with Blockbuster, which promised lots of opportunities, according to company head Wayne Huizenga in a rah rah video, was over.

Four years later, I got a job at my first dot com (Medsite.com), and began my chapter in online business, the space that would ultimately make Blockbuster obsolete. If only they didn’t make me work the holidays, maybe I would have stayed and saved Blockbuster.

On a side note, in the mid-90’s I was publishing a zine (a print publication – not an eZine), and I had a column in there called “Movies That Affected My Life”. Here is an entry about Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, and my time at Blockbuster.

Steve Martin stars as this high-strung guy that’s trying to get home to be with his family for Thanksgiving. After all sorts of travel disasters, Martin ends up being paired up with a huge pain in the ass, performed with an affected Clark Gable-type suave by John Candy.

It was about 5:00 or so when I popped this tape in the vcr. The store was pretty much empty. Since I was the newest manager at the time, I got stuck with working on Thanksgiving night, the 2:00 to close shift. The rest of the city was at home watching the Cowboys and eating turkey.

I was watching movies with a handful of cashiers that would rather work than be with their families. And so there I was, the Blockbuster in my hometown on Thanksgiving. Not that it mattered, really, because everybody in my family had gone out of town to visit and celebrate. I guess these were the trappings of drinking all though senior year, instead of finding a good internship.

Then at about 8:00 or so, one of the cashiers brought me a plate from her house. It made the food a little hard to digest though when I thought about how the Saturday before, she had propositioned me. She had a husband and two young children at home.

After finishing up the books, I headed home to my real feast. My first after-midnight Thanksgiving… a six pack of Private Stock and some cold KFC. In a way, it was the loneliest day of my life, but in a another way it was my best Thanksgiving.

Twenty years later, I’m heading to see the Cowboys play in person on Thanksgiving with my family, and then we’ll stream Planes, Trains, and Automobiles from Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Number of Affiliate Programs Promoted by Affiliates in 2013

November 7, 2013 by Shawn Collins

Affiliates were asked “How many affiliate programs are you currently promoting?” for the 2013 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

The most popular response, at 47.1%, was that affiliates are promoting 1-10 affiliate programs.

affstat-2013-number-of-programs

Then there were 16.3% working with 11-20 programs, and 14.4% who are currently promoting 21-50 affiliate programs.

The percentages of affiliate programs promoted continue to decrease as the amounts of affiliate programs increase until the 301+ level. At that point 12.4% of affiliates are promoting that many affiliate programs.

I suspect a great deal of those are coupon, deal, rebate, etc. sites.

In my case, I’d fall into the 21-50 group for actively promoting, though I have relationships with more than 100 affiliate programs.

More than sixteen-hundred affiliates were surveyed on their methods, preferences, and strategies for the 2013 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

Impact of Affiliate Nexus Tax in 2013

November 6, 2013 by Shawn Collins

Affiliates were asked “How many programs have you been removed from based on state legislation?” for the 2013 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

Fortunately, the vast majority of affiliate marketers, at 71.2%, have not been impacted.

However, there were 19.6% who have been removed from 1-9 affiliate programs, and then another 6.5% who got kicked out of 10-24 affiliate programs.

Stay on top of affiliate nexus tax issues and help fight legislation by joining the Performance Marketing Association.

More than sixteen-hundred affiliates were surveyed on their methods, preferences, and strategies for the 2013 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

Preferred Methods of Communication to Affiliates in 2013

November 5, 2013 by Shawn Collins

Affiliates were asked “What is your preferred method for finding out information from an affiliate manager?” for the 2013 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

The most popular response, with 56.3%, was email from an affiliate network.

affstat-2013-info-from-am

This was followed by mass email from the affiliate manager (17.1%), blog or company website (11.4%), Twitter (1.9%), Facebook (1.3%), and video (1.3%).

Additionally, there were 10.8% who picked Other, but didn’t specify.

I like getting email from the affiliate manager, but also like the information shared on Facebook and Twitter, in case I miss it.

More than sixteen-hundred affiliates were surveyed on their methods, preferences, and strategies for the 2013 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.

Ten Years After the First Affiliate Summit

November 1, 2013 by Shawn Collins

Ten years ago today I was really nervous. Missy Ward and I were two days away from running our first Affiliate Summit, and we didn’t know what we were doing.

Shawn Collins at the first Affiliate SummitThe event, billed as “a one-day workshop for affiliate managers”, was created on a shoestring budget.

Actually, there was no budget. We started with literally no money, and managed to get a free space at Baruch College to hold it – they hooked us up with the room and A/V in exchange for giving some passes to marketing students.

The “staff” for that first Affiliate Summit on November 3, 2003 were all volunteers; I created our crude looking program in Word; and we managed to collect money through registrations and sponsorships before any bills came due.

There was no business plan or even a logo at that time.

The site was an ugly template (one of the few things we spent money on). We manually sent out registration confirmation emails through Outlook, and stuffed all of the bags in a hotel room the night before.

Affiliate Summit 2003 bag

It was all just an idea: we wanted to create an event for the industry to get together to learn and network. A conference that was crafted by affiliate marketers and for affiliate marketers with nothing set in stone. We’d experiment and change things, based on what people wanted and needed.

And we wanted to do it in a more interactive way than we’d seen at other conferences, because we thought industry events were pretty boring.

Shawn Collins, Andy Rodriguez and Missy Ward

We got a bunch of friends to speak and charged $75 for a full day of sessions, speed networking (retired a few years later when Affiliate Summit got too big), roundtables (which we still do), and a networking lunch.

That first Affiliate Summit sold out pretty quick, and we were excited.

After we worked out the overhead, we had exactly zero profit, but also zero debt. We were both working full-time jobs outside of the conference, and it was a whole lot of work to break even.

Then again, nothing about our origins was rational. We had no money and we were not event planners. Just a couple marketers with passion.

Happy 10th Birthday to Affiliate Summit

Ten years later… I guess we had good instincts. Thank you to everybody who has helped build Affiliate Summit over the past decade.
