Adsertive LLC. Launches the Adsertive Network, The Newest Affiliate Performance-Based Marketing Network

January 19, 2006 by Shawn Collins

ROCHESTER, NY – January 19, 2006 – Adsertive, LLC. announced today the release of their new pay-for-performance affiliate system. This new affiliate network gives merchants and publishers a central place to connect, creating a dynamic Internet advertising marketplace.

Through this advertising network, merchants can get sales or leads for their product and services on a pay for performance basis. This minimizes the risk to a merchant compared to traditional media buying and guarantees a positive ROI.

At launch, Adsertive is offering many exclusive offers from a broad range of vertical categories. These have been carefully selected and screened to everyone’s success.

“Rather than trying to launch with thousands of offers within our system, we have tested and selected only the best offers with the highest payouts to launch our network with” says Rick Ramos, Director of Marketing. “This ensures that we provide our publishers with the easiest way to monetize their inventory without multiple rounds of offer testing, building that elusive trust per say. If an offer is in our system, it works”

Return on Affiliate – Social Networking for Affiliate Marketers

January 16, 2006 by Shawn Collins

I stopped by the booth for Return on Affiliate towards the end of Affiliate Summit 2006 in Vegas, and I don’t know how this neat idea has been under my radar for so long.

Return on Affiliate is sort of like LinkedIn or one of the other broad social networking communities, but it’s specific to affiliate marketers.

It’s free to set up an account there, and then you have access to searchable profiles of Return on Affiliate members, private and instant messaging, a company blog, message boards, etc.

Looks to be a good start – they’ve got over 100 members just 15 days after launching, and I’d love to see this grow into a place for affiliate marketers to connect, network and share expertise.

If you’re looking for my profile on there, I was feeling creative, so I went with Shawn as my screen name.

Revenue Magazine Coverage of Affiliate Summit 2006

January 14, 2006 by Shawn Collins

Revenue Magazine, the Performance Marketing Standard Magazine, has recapped the Affiliate Summit 2006 conference.

Lisa Picarille, Editor of Revenue Magazine, touched on the education, networking, and fraternization that took place at Affiliate Summit 2006.

The Affiliate Summit 2006 in Las Vegas earlier this week was great. I met tons of interesting people doing innovative things. I think the final tally for the conference was something like 1,200 attendees with 400 more on a waiting list. Wow. That’s a far cry from the humble beginnings just three years ago when about 300 affiliates took a cruise to Nova Scotia.

While some of the “old timers” recalled those cruising days with fondness, most others claimed that being trapped on a ship with no escape, having a roommate in a cramped cabin and feeling seasick for three days wasn’t their idea of a good time. No one, however, seemed to mind being land locked in the desert with strippers, an abundance of booze and an infinite number of ways to lose their hard earned commissions. Go figure.

The whole shebang kicked off Sunday evening with a speed dating-like networking event. I was dreading this part of the conference. I opted not to meet with anyone but made myself available if people wanted to meet with me. Turns out that each participant had a total of eight “dates”. Four of mine were no shows. To the 50 percent that blew me off (you know who you are) I will be marking this down on your permanent record. You’re now officially on my list.

Eliot Spitzer Case Against Affiliate Marketer Dismissed by Judge

January 13, 2006 by Shawn Collins

Back in December 2003, there was much ballyhoo at a press conference from New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer about a case he was bringing against Delta Seven Communications, OptInRealbig.com and Synergy6.

eliot_spitzer.jpgAt the press conference, a reporter asked Eliot Spitzer, “One of the issues here seems to be a question of affiliates. The Richter organization and Synergy 6, they just had affiliate programs, hundreds of people signed up who were commissioned for sending e-mails with the ultimate spammer Delta 7, as I understand, sent the mail and earned commissions from them. Can you talk about how you build a case against Richter, who didn’t seem to send those mails and Synergy 6?”

Eliot Spitzer replied, “Let me just say this. We don’t like to get into trial evidence at this stage of the process. We have absolutely no doubt we will be able to establish liability up that chain of command. Those who try to create buffers, as you point out, whether corporate or individual, and say, “I didn’t send it, someone else did,” and pretend there was some arm’s-length relationship between the two, we will pierce into those relationships and prove without a doubt that those, including Richter, and the corporations themselves are liable for the misbehavior of those that actually stand there and push the buttons.”

Fast forward two years later, and Eliot Spitzer has a bit of egg on his face. According to Adotas…

On January 11th (2006), the New York Supreme Court officially dismissed all charges against now-defunct online ad agency Synergy6 and its founder Justin Champion in regards to an ongoing investigation launched by Attorney General Eliot Spitzer in 2003 to determine whether email marketers, including Opt-InRealbig.com and Delta Seven Communications, were guilty of transmitting mass unsolicited emails.

This is on the heels of allegations against Spitzer that he made threats against Ex-Wall Street executive John Whitehead, who is now the head of the state Lower Manhattan Development Corporation, and others.

Plus, it’s looking like Spitzer may face a primary challenger in his quest to be Governor of the State of New York. Previously, he’d been all but anointed the next Governor of the state.

It’s been a tough month for Eliot Spitzer, and the implosion of one of his signature issues won’t help.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

January 13, 2006 by Shawn Collins

Jay Weintraub, Director of Market Strategy for Revenue.net, wrote an interesting piece for Digital Moses on some data that came out of Affiliate Summit 2006:

In her opening keynote address at Affiliate Summit, Anne Holland of Marketing Sherpa, said that affiliate marketing bounties and commissions will reach $6.5 billion in 2006, or roughly 40% of projected 2006 online advertising expenditures. As she writes on Marketing Sherpa yesterday, “This (number) includes retail, personal finance, gaming and gambling, travel, telecom, ‘Net marketing’ education offers, subscription sites, and other lead generation, but it does not include contextual ad networks such as Google AdSense.” Assuming 30% margins for the advertisers, which collectively seems a bit low, her prediction indicates that affiliate marketing will generate more than $9 billion dollars in revenue, more than half of the projected Internet advertising revenues for 2006.

Who Attended Affiliate Summit 2006

January 12, 2006 by Shawn Collins

I’ve had lots of folks ask me how many affiliates attended Affiliate Summit this time around. A quick check of the attendee statistics revealed the following:

  • Affiliates – 23%
  • Merchant / Advertiser – 31%
  • Affiliate Network / Advertising Network / CPA Network – 34%
  • Vendor – 5%
  • Staff – 1%
  • Press – 2%
  • Service Provider – 4%

The affiliate number is actually higher than the number of attendees identifying themselves as such, as CPA networks act in both an affiliate and merchant role.

Ask Shawn Collins: The Ideal Type of Affiliate Program to Promote

January 12, 2006 by Shawn Collins

I have had a sports betting website for about 14 months. I knew nothing about online marketing, SEO, html, nothing at all. I have done pretty good with it. My high month was $1,250. I have, for personal reasons, decided to get out of the gambling business. I’m just not feeling good about making money this way. I’m not judging it, just for me it’s not the way to go. My question to you is. What do I do now? I enjoy the affiliate business, but other than gambling, I don’t know what to get in to. I don’t know if I should promote one program or several. On my Web site, I promote only gambling. I have 6 sportsbooks I promote. What would you suggest? Can you give me some ideas on what programs to join and also, should I stick with one type of program such as gambling only, or should I promote different programs like RX, books, Travel?

There are dozens of categories of affiliate programs. But only you know what topics and areas interest you.

I would urge you to start up a content site, forum, blog, etc. that concentrates on an area that interests you, and then seek out affiliate programs that compliment the site(s) you create.

CAN-SPAM Compliance, Your Reputation and Deliverability What Affiliate Marketers Need to Know

January 10, 2006 by Shawn Collins

The final presentation at Affiliate Summit West 2006 was all about CAN-SPAM and what affiliate marketers need to know. The session was presented by Joshua Baer, CEO and Founder of UnsubCentral, and Brandon Phillips, President of Lashback.

Affiliate Summit WestThe presentation covered what affiliate marketers need to comply with CAN-SPAM, securely manage suppression list exchange, monitor suppression list management and select the best tools for protecting their brand’s reputation and deliverability (ROI).

When the CAN-SPAM Act defined the Advertiser as the Sender, the dynamics of affiliate marketing underwent a fundamental shift.

Because merchants are essentially viewed as the sum of their parts (i.e.; affiliate senders), it became necessary for them to crack down on any and all abuse and noncompliance on the parts of their affiliate partners in order to maintain their reputation and brand image.

As an advertiser, who you work with has never been more important, and as an affiliate, it is imperative that you learn how to properly manage suppression lists and overall CAN-SPAM compliance.

Big Affiliate Networks Dominate in Germany

January 7, 2006 by Shawn Collins

The following is what Michael Pietzka of metaapes had to say in response to the question, What is the Future of Affiliate Marketing?

Metaapes is offering services to merchants, who would like to get started with affiliate marketing or already have an affiliate programm, which they would like to get managed by an agency.

From the german market perspective, affiliate marketing is developing very well at the moment with networks like zanox and affilinet having the biggest share of the market, while other networks like CJ are getting bigger.

Despite the fact that there are also smaller networks in Germany, I’m quite sure that only the bigger ones will survive in the long run unless the smaller networks are able to find their market niche.

How would you answer the question, What is the Future of Affiliate Marketing? There are no right or wrong answers.

The author of any response that is published at affiliatetip.com or affiliatesummit.com will receive their choice of one of the following:

  • Size: small ‘It’s an affiliate thing, you wouldn’t understand.’ t-shirt
  • Size: medium ‘It’s an affiliate thing, you wouldn’t understand.’ t-shirt
  • Affiliate Summit coffee mug
  • Affiliate Summit optical mouse for a notebook computer
