I went to the first day of SMX East yesterday and had a chance to sit in on some informative sessions on topics like duplicate content and trademarks in paid search.
Some interesting revelations in the duplicate content session, such as Google’s Joachim Kupke saying there is no duplicate content penalty and that Google is “working on something to help ID a site as the original provider of content.”
Useful information from all, but I didn’t catch anything as quotable as the Google bits.
Another thing I enjoyed in this session on some weird level was that a bunch of the slides were small fonts with a bunch of code. Useful if I can get that presentation afterwards, but hard to consume from the back of the room. Those silly engineer types.
The Trademarks & Paid Search panel was informative, especially for affiliates in the PPC game.
But I’d have to say that my favorite line from this session wasn’t directly about trademarks, but rather a sort of metaphor. David Naffziger, CEO of BrandVerity mentioned that as a New England Patriots fan, he knows about cheating to win titles.
I’m paraphrasing – meant to Tweet it live, but I couldn’t get the WiFi to cooperate. Anyhow, I like that comparison of Bill Belicheat to a trademark poacher, especially from a Pats fan. I suppose Red Sox steroid hero David Ortiz could be used interchangeably here.
